Mandolin World News Back Issues
Special Purchase

We recently acquired a box of vintage Mandolin World News publications. They were owned by Bob Alekno, the late Mandolin World News staff member, and have been stored for several years. Some are in great shape, others worn or somewhat the worse for wear. All are sized 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. All are out of print and no longer available in this original, printed form. Specifics are shown below.

The collection is not complete and several issues are missing altogether. Those that we have are in short supply: most include only one or two copies. They'll be sold individually on a first come-first served basis. If you're interested, order now.

Mandolin World News was published, beginning in 1976, by David Grisman, Todd Phillips, and Darol Anger, founding members of the ground-breaking David Grisman Quintet. It ceased publication in 1984 after 31 issues. Each was packed to the staples with valuable information on every aspect of the mandolin and mandolin playing in all styles, all over the world.

Of the copies offered here, most are from the first printing for subscribers. Others, particularly those from 1976 and 1977, as well as the Grisman books mentioned below, were reprinted in the late 1970s/early 1980s as the subscriber list grew and back issues were wanted. Note that these are all "original," printed copies of the magazines and books, not photo copies. We mention this to distinguish them from the photo copies of out-of-print issues we offer on our regular Mandolin World News page. You can also find complete contents and descriptions of each issue on this page.

A few of the entries below include the description "previously addressed, mailed, returned." These issues were mailed to subscribers and returned for some reason. The covers are quite worn.

The box also included a few copies of David Grisman's very rare instructional books Ten Tunes in Nine Keys and Bluegrass Solos. Both are from a late 1970s/early 1980s reprint of the original mid--1970s books and are sized 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. Most copies are in quite good shape except for rusty staples, especially on the Bluegrass Solos books. As far as we know, these have not been available anywhere for over twenty years.

There's also one lone copy of the Mandolin World 1977 Catalog. It's filled with mail order ads for mandolin related recordings, books, strings, and such.

Since the copies are in such short supply, we'll enforce a "one-to-a-customer" policy on each item/issue. That'll give more people a chance to collect these original, out-of-print publications. If these go as fast as we expect, you can still get some originals (from Vol IX) and photo copies of all the others from the Mandolin World News page.

Postage varies with the number and pages and weight of the individual issues.
