Mandolin & Guitar Workshops in Northeast Portland, Saturday April 4, 2:00-5:00 PM, $40.00 for either workshop. For reservations and directions, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 503-282-0883.
This workshop is aimed at intermediate and beginning mandolinists who can play a variety of chords and have some experience playing single note lines and melodies. We’ll discuss the rudiments of good musicianship for mandolin players offering tips on basic techniques like picking, chording, tremolo, double stops, transposing, duet playing, and more. A range of styles will be examined including bluegrass, old time, blues, and swing. We’ll also discuss students’ individual questions and concerns. We’ll cover a lot of material and all the music discussed in class will be provided, including standard music notation, tablature, chords, etc., for later study. Students are encouraged to bring recorders to the workshop. Level: Students should be familiar with common chords on the mandolin, both open and closed string, be able to strum along with simple three chord songs, and be able to play a few easy single string melodies.
Jim's "Rhythm Guitar Workshop"
We’ll cover strum patterns that include and build on the simple bass-down, bass- down strum. From there we start covering the upstroke and some mute strum patterns, bass lines, the Lester Flatt G run, and common bass walks in the keys of G, C, and D. There will be heavy emphasis on dynamics within a strum and in a band context. We'll work in depth on tone and timing, with a strong emphasis on tone. Prerequisites: Be able to play with a flatpick, and move through chord changes smoothly, keeping time.

What a site! All those beautiful new Martins on stage in a beautiful old theater.
And, we got to play just about all of them! A picker's dream, if we ever did see one.
