Clinics & Workshops:
Swing/Jazz Chords, Comping, and Repertoire for Guitar with Dix Bruce Marin Community Music School 55 San Anselmo Avenue, San Anselmo, California. We'll learn chords a few at a time and then use them to play songs. Photocopies with all chords, progressions, melodies, chord diagrams, tablature, etc., will be provided. Then we'll all practice playing the chord/songs slowly together. We'll explore basic "swing" guitar chords, the "Gypsy Swing" chord comp or rhythm on guitar, and some great "must-know" Swing & Jazz standards including a jazz blues, a tango, a composition by Django Reinhardt, and more! You'll learn a variety of moveable, closed position chords useful in many styles of swing and jazz. We'll also work on getting that swing feel into our rhythm or "comp." Depending upon the skill levels of attendees, we may also explore more advanced subjects like basic chord subsitutions and transposing. All levels welcome but you should be familiar with major, minor, and seventh chords and be able to read chord diagrams. We'll provide sheets with songs and chords, excerpts from Dix's latest books on the subject. The most important pre-requisite is an interest in playing Swing and Jazz rhythm on the guitar! This workshop will provide students with a solid grounding in Swing and Jazz rhythm on the guitar by teaching a repertoire of chords, comps, and songs. Familiarity with these will in turn allow the student to play Swing and Jazz songs with others at jam sessions and in performance. Dix Bruce has produced over 50 instructional books and DVDs, as well as several audio CDs in a variety of musical styles. His books include "Gypsy Swing & Hot Club Rhythm Vol. I & II for Guitar," "BackUP TRAX: Swing & Jazz," and the best selling, six edition series, "The Parking Lot Picker?s Songbook." Guitar Workshop has released his DVD "Basic Swing Guitar." Dix composed and performed music for three incarnations the best-selling video game "The Sims." His free Musix Newsletters with downloadable lessons and MP3s are available here. Video clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKxxPTmVH3s
California Bluegrass Assn. Winter Music Camp 2012 Dix will be teaching "Guitar, level 2, solos." The focus will be on making up leads to bluegrass songs and fiddle tunes. We'll explore preparing a solo or parts of solos prior to performing. Our starting point will be the melody but we'll learn to add interesting ideas to customize the solo. A broad range of bluegrass techniques, such as hammers, slides, bends, blue notes (and possibly double stops, playing up the neck, crosspicking, etc. depending upon the level of the students) will be used. We'll learn several solos as a class, all of which will be provided on photocopies in standard notation and tablature. Prerequisites: Students should be able to play solid rhythm and some simple leads. Audio recording devices welcome. Spiral bound music notebook with standard notation and/or TAB recommended. Other teachers: Vocals: Peter Rowan, Keith Little Guitar: Jim Nunally, Sylvia Herold Cost: $350 and up includes all instruction and activities ($50 for Fungrass) www.cbacamp.org info@cbacamp.org (415) 664-1342 Jim Nunally's schedule: http://www.jimnunally.com/ |
